In the early 1900s, an American businessman was kidnapped by a rebellious Arab chieftain,
principally as a means to embarrass the sultan of Morocco. This abduction sparked the threat of armed intervention by
President Theodore Roosevelt, which was never carried out. In The Wind and the Lion, the unattractive male captive is
replaced by the gorgeous female Mrs. Pedecaris, an American widow played by Candice Bergen. The ruthless but essentially
decent Arab chief Raisuli is portrayed by Sean

Nello scrivere la sceneggiatura il
regista John Milius si basa su fatti veramente accaduti - il rapimento da parte del bandito marocchino Raizuli di Ion
Perdicaris, un americano espatriato a Tangeri - ma tramuta il soggetto in una donna vedova e madre di due figlie
arricchisce la storia con un attacco degli Americani al palazzo del pascià di Tangeri. Sean Connery - che ottiene la
parte per la quale sono in lizza anche Omar Sharif e Anthony Quinn - interpreta un capo ribelle berbero che all'inizio
del ventesimo secolo rapisce Eden Pedecaris (Candice Bergen) e prole per ottenere la morte del sultano. La pellicola si
aggiudica due nomination all'Oscar come Migliore colonna sonora originale (di Jerry Goldsmith) e Miglior suono.
